On July 8, 2026, Meta said it was breaking ground on a 1 GW, AI-optimized data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta, its first data center in Canada and the 33rd in its global fleet. Meta put the investment at more than CA$13 billion, plus about CA$60 million in local infrastructure improvements. It expects about 3,000 construction workers at peak and more than 300 operational jobs.
Meta said it planned the site’s energy supply with Greenlight Limited Partnership, AltaLink and the Alberta Electric System Operator, and committed to 100% clean and renewable energy for it.
