This OpenAI models list covers every GPT and o-series language model from GPT-4 in March 2023 to GPT-6.1 Sol in September 2026, with its release date and its API status as of October 2026. The newest are the GPT-6 family: GPT-6 Astra (September 3, 2026), GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna (September 22) and GPT-6.1 Sol (September 29). Many older models, including o1, o3-mini and GPT-4 Turbo, have announced shutdown dates.

Dates come from OpenAI’s API changelog and announcement posts; status comes from OpenAI’s deprecations page. Audio, image and video models are left out.

How to read the list

OpenAI separates “deprecated” from “shut down.” A model becomes deprecated the day OpenAI announces it, and keeps working until its shutdown date, after which it is no longer accessible. OpenAI’s stated minimum notice is six months for generally available models, three months for specialized variants such as Codex or chat models, and as little as two weeks for preview models.

Status often applies to a dated snapshot rather than the whole name. For example, the original gpt-4o-2024-05-13 snapshot is scheduled to shut down, while no shutdown date is listed for GPT-4o itself. Where that is the case, the table names the snapshot.

The GPT-4 era (2023–2025)

OpenAI announced GPT-4 on March 14, 2023, and GPT-4 Turbo, with a 128K context window, at DevDay on November 6, 2023. GPT-4o followed on May 13, 2024 and GPT-4o mini on July 18, 2024.

In 2025 OpenAI released a research preview of GPT-4.5 on February 27, then the GPT-4.1 family on April 14, with context windows of up to 1M tokens. GPT-4.5 preview was the first of these to go: it shut down on July 14, 2025.

The o-series reasoning models (2024–2025)

The o-series introduced models trained with reinforcement learning to reason before answering. o1-preview and o1-mini arrived on September 12, 2024, o1 reached the API in December 2024, and o3-mini followed on January 31, 2025. OpenAI introduced o3 and o4-mini on April 16, 2025, with o1-pro (March 2025) and o3-pro (June 2025) as higher-compute versions.

o1-preview and o1-mini have already shut down. Most other o-series snapshots are scheduled to close on October 23, 2026, and the o3 and o3-pro snapshots on December 11, 2026. OpenAI lists GPT-5.6 models as their replacements.

GPT-5 to GPT-5.6 (2025–2026)

GPT-5, with GPT-5 mini and GPT-5 nano, launched on August 7, 2025. OpenAI then moved to a fast point-release cycle: GPT-5.1 on November 13, 2025, GPT-5.2 on December 11, 2025, GPT-5.4 on March 5, 2026 and GPT-5.5 on April 24, 2026. GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.5 each support a 1M-token context window, according to the changelog. Codex variants for agentic coding shipped alongside: GPT-5-Codex, GPT-5.1-Codex, GPT-5.2-Codex and GPT-5.3-Codex.

GPT-5.6, released July 9, 2026, introduced named tiers: Sol for frontier capability, Terra for a balance of intelligence and cost, and Luna for efficient, high-volume work. The gpt-5.6 alias routes to GPT-5.6 Sol.

GPT-6 (September 2026)

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026, describing it as “our most capable model, built for the hardest end-to-end work.” The changelog lists differences from earlier models: GPT-6 Astra has no none reasoning setting, does not accept custom temperature or top_p values, and requires the Responses API for tool calling.

GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, reasoning models with text and image input, followed on September 22, 2026. Our news report on GPT-6 Sol and Luna covers that release. On September 29, at DevDay, OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Sol for “complex coding and professional work”; see our DevDay 2026 report.
