OpenAI and Synopsys announced on September 30, 2026, a multi-year agreement to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model that reasons about chip design and verification and operates Synopsys’ electronic design automation (EDA) tools directly. According to Synopsys’ announcement, the two companies will work as preferred partners, and early technology engagements with leading semiconductor customers are already under way.
The deal was announced on the same day as Synopsys’ 2026 Investor Day.
The terms
| Item | As stated in the announcement |
|---|---|
| Model | GPT-Synopsys, built on OpenAI frontier models |
| Licensing | OpenAI licenses Synopsys EDA tools to develop the model |
| Commercial terms | Joint R&D and go-to-market under a shared revenue framework |
| Hosting | Runs on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure |
| Integration | Synopsys.ai and the Synopsys Autopilot agentic platform; interoperates with customers’ own agent harnesses |
| Data | Customer data not used for training; encrypted at rest and in transit; configurable retention, audit and permission controls |
| Status | Early engagements with semiconductor customers; no general availability date given |
What the model is meant to do
The announcement describes engineers handing GPT-Synopsys a design objective, such as power, performance and area (PPA) optimization or timing and verification closure, and agents then running the tools, reading the results, making changes and iterating until there is a verified outcome for the engineer to review. That is a different job from a chat assistant answering questions about EDA documentation: the model drives the design and verification tools themselves, and an engineer reviews the result.
For OpenAI, the agreement takes its frontier models into a specialized, tool-operating product built with a domain partner and sold under a shared revenue framework. For chip design, it puts a frontier lab’s model inside the EDA workflow that chips, AI accelerators included, go through before manufacturing. OpenAI’s recent model releases include GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on September 22.
OpenAI’s and Synopsys’ corporate status is tracked in AI companies, and released models are logged in AI model updates. Other lab partnerships are in AI lab news.
