Anthropic deprecated fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8 on October 30, 2026, and set November 30 as its removal date. The change affects requests that combine claude-opus-4-8 with speed: "fast"; Anthropic says those requests will return an error after removal.
The dated platform release note directs developers who need fast mode to Claude Opus 5.5. It describes a feature deprecation, not the retirement of every use of Opus 4.8. Teams should keep that distinction when checking which production calls need a change.
What fast mode changes
Anthropic’s fast-mode documentation describes a faster inference configuration of the same model, rather than a different intelligence tier. The company advertises up to 2.5 times higher output tokens per second at premium pricing. That is a provider claim, not a measurement by The Model Press.
The speed claim concerns generation throughput, not time to the first token. A workflow dominated by tool execution or other external waits should therefore not equate it with a matching reduction in total task time.
Check the request, not just the model name
An integration review needs both the model identifier and the speed setting. Search application configuration, shared API wrappers and deployment defaults for the affected combination. A model name alone does not show whether fast mode is enabled.
Before changing a production default, compare representative outputs and error handling in the replacement configuration. That is a migration check, not evidence that the two model versions behave identically.
Fast mode also has its own rate limit. Anthropic documents a 429 response and a retry-after header when that capacity is exhausted. Migration testing should cover that path as well as successful responses.
For background on interpreting model documentation, see model cards and system cards. The deadline here comes from Anthropic’s October 30 release note; the speed and rate-limit explanation comes from its current fast-mode guide. No independent performance test was conducted.
